Maschio Angioino castle in Napoli

Its construction is due to the initiative of Carlo Angiò, who in 1266 defeated the Swedes , ascended the throne of Sicily and established the transfer of the capital from Palermo to Naples .

The presence of a monarchy was set up outside the Naples urban planning around the center of royal power , constituting an alternative urban center , formed from the port and from the two main castles adjacent to it , and Castel Capuano Castel dell 'Ovo . This relationship between the royal court and town planning had already manifested with Frederick II, who in the thirteenth century, in the Swabian statute had focused more attention on the castles overlooking the city walls at all . The two castles joined the main existing Angevins , New Castle , which was not only fortification but above all their grandiose palace.

The royal residence of Naples had been until then Castel Capuano, but the ancient Norman fortress was judged inadequate to the function and the king wanted to build a new castle by the sea .

Awarded the project to the French architect Pierre de Chaulnes , the works for the construction of Castrum Novum took off in 1279 to finish just three years later, a very short time considering the construction techniques of the period and the total amount of the work. The king , however, never lived there : Following the revolt of the Sicilian Vespers , which cost all'Angioino the crown of Sicily , conquered by Peter III of Aragon and other events , the new palace remained unused until 1285 , the year of death of Carlo I.
